More than 1000 experts, including Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak (co-founder of Apple) have called in a letter for an immediate halt to the development of artificial intelligence systems that are more powerful than Chat GPT-4 for at least 6 months.
The reasons? We explain them below:
Lack of planning
As the letter indicates, advanced AI could represent a profound change in the history of life on Earth, and should be planned and managed with appropriate care and resources.
Moreover, they point out that unfortunately, this level of planning and management is not happening and laboratories are only competing in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one – not even their creators – can reliably understand, predict or control.
Job losses
Contemporary AI systems are coming to compete with humans in general tasks. The letter raises the question of whether we should really automate all jobs, including the successful ones.
As a reflection they add whether we should really develop non-human minds that will eventually outnumber us, out-intelligence us and therefore end up being obsolescent and replaceable.
The research adds that the use of AIs needs to be well thought through to ensure that they are beneficial to society and that their risks can be managed.
Doubts about their safety
In a society where there are more and more fake news and fake propaganda channels, AI plays a key role as it is becoming easier and easier to pass off a fake image or video as a real one.
Experts indicate that this pause should be used to jointly develop and implement a set of shared security protocols for advanced AI design and development that are rigorously audited and monitored by independent external experts.
They recommend that governments and regulators should monitor and track the development of AIs. Furthermore, they indicate that if this pause cannot be regulated, an intervention and suspension should be imposed to ensure that the development of AIs is public and verifiable.
