Linkedin celebrates 20 years with almost one billion users

Linkedin

The largest professional social network on the market has been evolving for two decades, adapting to the labour market and the needs of professionals and employers.

Linkedin was founded on 5 May 2003 by Californian Reid Hoffman. Since then, the global community has grown to more than 930 million members worldwide. Of all these users, 17 million are in Spain.

Linkedin’s reach is so large that a total of 3 people register on the platform every second and 8 people are recruited every minute – truly dizzying figures.

Despite these changes, the platform’s mission remains intact. According to Angel Sáenz de Cenzano, Managing Director of Linkedin for Spain and Portugal, Linkedin’s mission remains the same as in the beginning: to create professional opportunities around the world, thus connecting people.

Reinventing corporate culture

Linkedin has evolved from a platform primarily focused on job search to a community where more than 930 million professionals around the world connect to network, search for jobs, learn new skills, stay informed, hire, prosper and sell.

The pandemic has pushed professionals to re-evaluate their priorities, and companies must now focus on the well-being and personal satisfaction of their employees. To ensure that not only the work aspect but also the more human side is valued, organisations are changing their policies and starting to offer flexible working conditions, invest in wellness programmes and improve diversity and inclusion. Companies and employees are forging a new, more dynamic relationship based on trust and empathy. Therefore, in order to attract, retain and build a great team to achieve their goals, companies must improve or restructure their culture to meet the expectations of professionals who want to prioritise the human aspect.

How to improve corporate culture?

According to the international recruitment trends for 2022 published by LinkedIn, we are currently in a time where the company culture must be people-centric. These are the areas that are considered most important when looking for a job:

  • Promoting professional development: Offering opportunities for development and training within the company.
  • Work flexibility and work-life balance: The traditional work model is giving way to flexibility. When employees have a choice, they work at ease. In fact, flexibility has become one of the main demands of companies.
  • Well-being, empathy and mental health: To foster healthy cultures, companies need to be humane and empathetic. If employees feel well cared for, they are more likely to feel fulfilled and recommend working for your company.
  • The cultural values of the company: Candidates look not only at the remuneration, but also at the mission and vision of the company, and whether it is close to their values and motives for working there. To attract new professionals, it is necessary to focus on employees’ stories.

Conclusions

According to these international trends elaborated by Linkedin, this is the situation of the current labour market 20 years after the creation of Linkedin. Organisations that can reinvent their working model will have a great advantage. If companies can master the key aspects of improving corporate culture, they can have a great advantage over other companies.
