Facebook

The measure benefits any user who registered on Facebook and who lives or lived in the United States between 2007 and 2022.

What is the lawsuit against Facebook?

Facebook, the now well-known Meta, owned by Mark Zuckerberg, has reached an agreement with the Court of North Carolina, in the United States, by which it is obliged to pay 725 million dollars (657 million euros) as financial compensation for the violation of its users’ data.

In 2018, Facebook was accused of sharing personal information with third parties, including the British political consultancy Cambridge Analytica.

The scandal that ensued led to several lawsuits and after years of legal proceedings, Facebook has accepted payment for the lawsuit.

Eligible users will be able to submit their compensation through this online form, where their share of the compensation will be calculated.

The importance of legal pages in web design

When building a website, it is very important to include the legal pages in order to provide a more secure user experience. The legal texts of a website have two functions for the user:

  • Ensuring a safe browsing experience
  • Comply with the different data protection laws at national and EU level.

The pages that must be included are the following (This may vary from country to country):

  • Legal notice
  • Privacy policy
  • Cookie Policy
  • Terms and conditions of sale / use

The legal notice collects information and identifies the owner of a web site, the privacy policy informs customers and users about the personal data that is collected when browsing the site and how it is used, the cookie policy is a warning of the installation of cookies (or user identification elements) and the terms and conditions of sale/use is the legal text for e-commerce sites.

As you can see, these are important aspects to take into account when designing a website.
